The poetry incorporated into the Transborder Immigrant Tool we looked at on Thursday reminded me of Joy Buolamwini's work as a "Poet of Code." She does interesting and urgent research on racial biases embedded in AI facial recognition technology, often communicating her findings in creative modes of expression. The poem below demonstrates the way this tech often fails Black women by misgendering them or mischaracterizing their identities.
"Face by face the answers seem uncertain
Young and old, proud icons are dismissed
Can machines ever see my queens as I view them?
Can machines ever see our grandmothers as we knew them?"
