Blog Post 2 (non-core post) - Maggie Roberts

This article, published last week in The Washington Post, reviews the propulsion of prejudice tweets online following (and celebrating) the company’s takeover by Elon Musk. The profile in question is a sock account, speaking to the anonymous quality of the internet which “made people bold and free, and also able to distance themselves from the impacts of their words” (18). However, as we know, nothing on the internet is truly private, so is this feeling of anonymity a complete façade, or somewhat substantiated? What does it mean for tech industries and consumers alike when hate becomes legible from an unnamed (and seemingly unknown) source?
