The messiness here took me back to our discussion of platforms and of course surveillance. Facebook is protesting Apple’s introduction of a choice to users about whether they want their information tracked across applications and websites on Apple devices, which could adversely affect the value of Facebook advertising. Speaks to the mutual imbrication of these virtual spaces and, really, it’s possible too see this as an exception that proves the rule, in terms of how bound together the incentives of these companies tend to be when it comes to harvesting user data. Anything that produces friction in this process (or renders it visible) is suspect.
