PSA: Your rights under CCPA (Rohan - non-core post)

Following up on my presentation a couple weeks ago about GDPR/CCPA, I wanted to share a couple pro tips for exercising a (nominal) degree of control over your personal information.

The California Office of the Attorney General has useful information here: https://oag.ca.gov/privacy/ccpa. CCPA generally applies to for-profit companies that do business in the state, and it covers all California residents. In my experience, businesses don't make the effort to verify that you are a California resident so it's fairly easy for nearly anyone to exercise rights like requesting copies of and then deleting your personal data on their servers. The easiest way to do that is to use a company's CCPA portal (for a large company like Google) or just use the "contact us" email address/form (for a small/medium company).

It's possible to exercise GDPR rights this way, too, especially since GDPR applies to anyone in the European Economic Area regardless of citizenship or residency.

Finally, a friendly reminder that when you're prompted to accept or reject cookies, you can ALWAYS reject without affecting your ability to use that website. Any cookies that the company has deemed "essential" are going to run no matter what you select. Decline away!
