I highly recommend this video by Wendover Productions explaining the economics of being a YouTube creator. Specifically:
1:42: They explain how YouTube creators make money from advertisers through AdSense. More relevant to our class, though, is that they also describe how creators who attract different types of audiences (e.g. English-speaking, older, people with disposable income) earn higher RPMs (revenue per mille). This reminded me of Chun's and Cheney-Lippold's writings about how personal data gets plugged into ML models and algorithms.
9:23: Good illustration of how YouTube is so successful at platform capitalism.
14:10: The platformization of creators?
